the Albany Mummies

Did you know that there’s a little bit of Ancient Egypt right here in the Capital Region? Well, you may be interested in knowing that right in the historic Albany Institute of History and Art building, there are not one but two mummies. 2009 marks the 100th anniversary of the Institute having obtained these mummies, and their exhibit has recently been remodeled with a comprehensive time-line, quite a good number of artifacts, and even a mummified dog (the ancient Egyptians held their pets with a similar reverence as we do today).

Purchased from Cairo in 1909, it was discovered that there was one male and one female. The male has been identified as Ankhefenmut, a priest and sculptor. Unfortunately, little is known about the female. Both mummies are thought to be about 3000 years old (thanks AOA for the info!!).

At only $10 for adults, $8 for students, and $6 for kids, this museum is definitely worth checking out. Aside from the Egyptian exhibit, the museum currently houses a special quadricentennial exhibit celebrating the area’s discovery by Henry Hudson in 1609, as well as many wonderful works of art- primarily devoted to local history and culture.
