Local Music Profile: Mirk & the New Familiars

Interview conducted on 1/07/10

It is no secret to many that the Capital Region has a ripe local music scene, along with a plethora of venues to enable us to support and enjoy these local artists. One such artist is Joshua “Mirk” Mirsky, front man of the local group Mirk and the New Familiars. This unique and talented group has “a new fresh sound, with a certain sense of familiarity,” and if any local band will achieve national acclaim, it’s this one.

The group released their debut album, “LOVE” this past February 14, 2009, and their second album (Title TBD) is tentatively scheduled for a June 8, 2010 release date and will be released independently through New Familiar Records. Their full bio can be read at www.sonicbids.com/newfamiliarmusic.

I was fortunate enough to engage in a little Q&A session with Mirk, to find out what’s going on with the group.

Q: Your music is so unique (in a good way), that I have no idea how to classify it. Care to take a stab at it?
A: I don't know... Hip Pop Electro Soul.

Q: What has been your biggest achievement so far?

A: For the band? This year in shows has been great! We really set out to hit the local scene hard and establish a home fan base. We think we've been pretty successful!!! And as a result need to thank the people who keep showing up where we play for helping make that goal a reality!! Biggest achievement for me? Definitely selling a beat to Jay-Z this year!! That was huge for me...

Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: In ten years, in a perfect world, I see us on tour promoting our 6th album, while having a reputation as world class producers and songwriters... Because while I wrote and produced the majority of the materiel for the "Love" album, there are many talented writers in the band!!

Q: What's next for you?
A: Next we're taping for "Fearless Music"!! A TV show that is syndicated in 200 cities nationwide and broadcasts locally on My 4, cable channel 4 (channel 15 for those with no cable)... Not sure of the broadcast date yet, but I'm pretty sure it airs within a month of the taping and we're taping on 1/14... Check out fearlessmusic.com for updates and to vote so we can be on 2 weeks in a row... lol.

Their next show is at the Lark Tavern on Saturday, Feb 20th.
